MailChimp is a great service for collecting emails. You can customize a lot and create multiple lists and campaigns.

Single opt-in

There are a number of ways to subscribe to a list.

Some use single opt-in signup forms which work like this:

1. People enter their email.

2. Then they are signed up.

It's very fast and simple, however, it can result in unfortunate situations with spambots, incorrect emails, and emails which will never be opened.

Double opt-in

Another way is to use double opt-in.

In Mailchimp, when navigating to Lists > Choose list > Signup forms you have the option to choose what kind of opt-in you are going to use.

With double opt-in people it works like this:

1. People enter their email.

2. You check your email and confirm the subscription.

3. Then they are signed up.

There are a number of great benefits with double opt-ins. You might not get as many subscribers, but the subscribers you get are interested in your emails. They took action and made an effort to sign up. That means they are engaging and willing to be informed about what you are offering.

You are also protected better against spambots and in the end your conversion rates will be higher.

Opt-in reCAPTCHA

This is something more and more people use. This adds trust and prevents spambots from signing up.

It's a great way to add a layer of confirmation, but the user is still more inclined to signup and be engaging if you use double opt-in.

When you've got your subscriber it would be a good idea to send them a welcome email and a thank you.

Signup thank you page

This page is a great way to tell your subscriber to go check their email, when using double opt-in. It's important to actually tell the user to confirm their subscription.
